Title:
DMIR 2-8-8-4 #220 - Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range
Description:
This massive marvel of steam power was built by Baldwin in 1941 and met every hurdle in handling long pulls with ease. Powerful yet a hungry, this engine could devour coal and water quickly. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum site -- http://www.lsrm.org/Museum/mallet.htm gives some interesting consumption numbers: " When working at full power, [the locomotive] could consume some 10 to 12 tons of coal an hour and evaporate water into steam at the astounding rate of 12,000 gallons per hour. The amount of coal ...used in one hour would be enough to heat a home for two winters." (and Minnesota winters at that, one supposes.) Specs - M-3 class Yellowstone type, 63" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 695,040 lb, impressive tractive effort of 140,093 lb. Unknown photographer and the date is approximate.
